“Est 1873: An Illustrated History of Martin, Tenn.” is a University Scholars Project by Rachel Melton. The project includes research and creation of a series of graphic design posters and illustrations focused on various aspects of Martin history, including businesses, events and locations. The purpose of the project is to preserve local history through creating visual pieces centered on landmarks, businesses and events. It serves as a way to connect with community members in various avenues and build an appreciation for the use of design in preserving local history and for its importance in the future.
The 70-page book features original historical photos that inspired the work, the complete set of illustrations, and a series of current photographs of Martin as well as information about Martin locations.
The pieces in the exhibition are based on original documentary photography of Martin as well as information from local archives.
If you choose to pick up your books locally instead of having them shipped, you will receive an email notification when they are ready for pickup at the Weakley County Press.
